"Coastal Landscapes with Andrew Jenkin" - April 2024

A great turn out for Andrew Jenkin's workshop which just goes to prove how popular he is.

We were all keen to learn from his artistic processes and creativity and wow, what a day we had.
Andrew challenged us to paint a coastal landscape and took us through the whole process from blocking in the shapes to layer upon layer as the image evolved.
We learnt so many techniques, everyone's favourite was the cling film rocks.  There were subtle cues too - think of the paint like milk to cream, lost to found and how to incorporate mixed media.
There were lots of tips on mixing colour, using a variety of brushes and having a limited palette.
Thanks to our excellent tuition and guidance our members were happy with their own versions of a Welsh coastal landscape.
Andrew runs regular watercolour classes and is participating in the Wirral Open Studio Tour in June.  Check him out at https://andrewjenkin.co.uk/

"Abstracting the Landscape using a Magic Palette" - March 2024

This afternoon we were treated to a colour explosion thanks to our member Angela Wright-Davies.
Angela challenged us to use our imagination and explore mark making with anything including big brushes, credit cards and silicone palette knives that she used to create a sense of movement.
Using a limited palette (Angela's choice was a violet, cerulean blue , cadmium yellow and a deep purple), Angela encouraged us to mix colours on the canvas, rather than on the palette.  She demonstrated the joy of working with layers of paint be they thick or thin. Each one leading you in a direction where you should go with the flow.
Angela invited us to look at whats happening on the canvas.  "See where it takes you" she promoted, along with embracing happy accidents.
Angela came around everyone, giving words of encouragement  and inspiring us to be brave and  experiment with colours that we wouldn't normally use.  It made for a lively workshop and some interesting pieces by the end of the session

"Landscape Workshop with Mark Warner" - January 2024

What a joy it was to welcome Mark Warner to our January workshop.
Mark demonstrated his significant style in line and colour as he took us on a journey through the development from image to finished work.  Throughout the journey we received a lot of encouragement.
As the day progressed we embraced Mark's energetic and colourful style. He encouraged us to interpret the image and view the landscape in a different way.
The key message that we took away was to look for the shapes and the important lines, link the painting using colour repetition, create movement using your brushstrokes and vary the pressure on your brush.
In the main we used a limited palette of cerulean blue, prussian blue, naples yellow, titanium white and leaf green.  When mixing colours we started with the mid-tones, this enabled us to lighten or darken them as required.
Mark encouraged us to work loose and quickly.  Well done to those members managed two completed pieces during the session.
There were lots of smiles, lots of fun and everyone was pleased with what they'd achieved thanks to our inspiring guest, Mark Warner.

"Congratulations !"

Some of our members have had notable successes recently.

Angela Wright Davies and Susie Liddle have had work accepted by the prestigious Royal Cambrian Academy for the summer open exhibition 2024.

The standard here is very high and this means that the quality of the work of these two experienced artists has been recognised by the selectors and their work will be shown along with the best of amateur and professional  artists.

And one of our newer members, Susan Laybourn, came second in the beginners class of the Society for all Artists  annual open competition, with a beautiful portrait which was printed in the SAA magazine recently. This is a very competitive national event with a large number of entries, so again this is a recognition of work of a high quality from a CAS member in the earlier stages of her career.

Many congratulations to all three.

"Bill Gribble's Workshop" - November 2023

What a great afternoon we've had. Bill Gribble demonstrated his inspirational techniques as he led us on a journey painting a beautiful seascape.

The key message was to keep looking for the tonal contrast, the shapes, distance, warmth and transparency, keep moving around the painting and paint in layers.

His technique of covering the canvas with an acrylic wash and using a natural sponge to 'draw' was like alchemy as the movement and emotion was revealed in the painting.

Bill shared so many of his techniques and tips whilst continuing to develop his demonstration and instilling confidence in us all to get into our own painting space and give it a go.

Remember to have fun and you're always learning so keep on practicing.

"Sad News"

We have just received the sad news that our President, Winn Garroch has passed away. Many members of CAS have known Winn for years and recall her contribution to the life of the Society, which she endeavoured to continue even when her health was no longer good. Members particularly enjoyed her Christmas “Winn’s Challenge” which was always a fun afternoon and produced some spectacular “creations”.

Winn was a caring person who enjoyed life and a lovely artist. She will be very much missed.

Sketching Day at Mostyn Hall" - August 2023

We had a pleasant plein air sketching day at Mostyn Hall, near Holywell organised for us by Angela.

This beautiful house is set in 25 acres of garden. Of note were the Japanese Garden, the Knot Garden and the views across the estuary.

Apart from one brief shower it stayed dry enough for sketching, painting and picnics.

selection of photos from the day.

"Cut & Collage Creative Printing Workshop" - July 2023

This month we had the pleasure of attending a workshop with the lovely Ruth Thomas.

Ruth introduced us to the art of cut and collage printing and kindly brought along a selection of her tools for us to use. She also brought some examples of her beautiful work.

We had so many questions and Ruth was delighted to share her skills and knowledge with us.

Thanks to Ruth's time management, she guided us step-by-step through the process. Everyone produced a selection of prints by the end of the session and we couldn't wait to see each others prints as they came of the press.

"Sketching and Painting Holiday" - June 2023

Several members enjoyed four days away in Aberystwyth on the annual "Sketching and Painting Holiday".
Although the weather was mixed with both sunshine and showers a great time was had by everyone. Sea views from the hotel rooms allowed work to continue despite the rain showers. Wet and moody seascapes provided great picture opportunities. Local restaurants offered a wide choice of international cuisine for evening meals.
The last night mojitos were a highlight! Many thanks to Angela for organising everything.

"Pastel Demonstration & Visit to Oriel Glasfryn"  - June 2023

Members enjoyed an inspirational pastel demonstration given by well known local artist Dave Roberts at his home, Glasfryn Hall in Caerwys.

Dave’s work is inspired by the Welsh landscape, in particular the mountains and lakes of Snowdonia.  He was very generous in sharing his process and the techniques he uses to get the spectacular effects you see in his paintings.  His innate talent and years of experience made it look deceptively easy and he is a patient and engaging teacher.

Following the demonstration we were able to visit Oriel Glasfryn.  The gallery is full of art and crafts by Welsh artists including sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and glass, as well as Dave;s own paintings and is a joy to visit.  @orielglasfryngallery

"A Question of Perspective" with Kathy Williams  - May 2023

Members enjoyed a challenging afternoon with Kathy Williams who shared her skills and experience in perspective with us.

Kathy took a difficult subject and simplified it into basic shapes taking us through the key points step by step.  She brought numerous example drawings with her to illustrate key features such as single and two point perspective,  vanishing points and sight lines.

We tried a series of quick drawing exercises using cubes to see how a change in sight line affects the view.

Kathy's key messages are that the sight line is always horizontal - approximately 1.5m up from your feet. The vanishing point is on the eyeline and orthogonal lines radiate from the vanishing point. (Although there are always exceptions to the rule).

We welcomed two new members, Mark and Sian.

"Clwydian Art Society - Member's Afternoon - April 2023"

Thank you to everyone who attended our April workshop. Being so close to Easter we had a lovely themed still life set up by Rosie Tuszynska and it was interesting to see the various interpretations of this.

Some members challenged themselves to use a variety of medium such as charcoal, watercolour and acrylic or to tackle a subject matter outside their comfort zone.

Thank you to those of you who brought cakes and savouries - they were much appreciated.

Thank you to to those who shared what they have been working on recently.

The workshop was a great opportunity to exchange tips, ideas and encouragement.

Members enjoyed a most relaxing afternoon with Chloe Dymond at our March Event.

Chloe began with a mind-fullness activity to help us all to focus and to be calm.

She demonstrated, step by step, how to develop our Mandala with insights into their origin and how they can be used. It was amazing to look at everyone's work at the end of the session to see how varied they were.

"Imagined Landscapes in Acrylic" with Angela Wright - Davies

We had a brilliant workshop with Angela Wright-Davies. She encouraged us to be loose and to follow our instincts. It was great to see how Angela developed from an initial concept through to a completed piece of work with lots of examples from her sketchbook to examples of her previous work.  She uses a small notepad to create small tonal sketches to aid composition – like notans – and then sets aside her reference photo and lets her imagination guide her intuitive mark making and bold use of colour. The result is captivating paintings which are fresh and contemporary. Everyone felt so relaxed and it was lovely to have our new members there.

"Environmental Art Workshop" with Tim Pugh

On 12th November we welcomed Tim Pugh (@timothypughartist) who led an inspiring workshop on making art from found natural materials.

Tim’s infectious enthusiasm and fascinating stories had us eager to discover what we could create. Autumn leaves in beautiful colours were combined with acorn cups, seed heads, twigs, shells  and petals to make wonderful art.  It was very satisfying and quite magical.

As ever, each artist produced their own unique creation and we all inspired each other in an atmosphere of playful exploration of this wonderful art form.

A walk through the woods or along the beach will never be quite the same again.

“Tim’s wonderful tales of foraging for materials, and his charm, we’re really inspiring.”

“Very enjoyable.  Tim is very inspiring. His approach to his art is really the artistic redemption of the wasteful consumption of society." “It was such fun to do. Art should be fun.”

"Freestyle Watercolour" with Rosie Tuszynska

Rosie Tuszynska gave us a fabulous workshop "Freestyle Watercolour" on Saturday 8th October 2022 at Rhewl Pavilion.

We all benefited from her demonstrations and supportive guidance in a relaxed and fun session. Bringing with her some of her own artistic creations we were encouraged to be creative with her ideas and incorporate our own styles into what turned out to be diverse individual pieces of art.

Karen gave a vote of thanks and it was evident that all members had enjoyed three hours and had learnt something new and had a very social and productive afternoon with many giving their own personal thanks to Rosie too!

This was a member led workshop by Rosie with lots of generous sharing of her skills.

Thanks to all who were able to attend, too!

The gardens were so diverse, ranging from a parterre to sculpted topiary, water lilies and woodland walks.

Everyone enjoyed some light refreshments (aka delicious cake) in the tea room after sketching.

The tour of the house was brilliant made all the more animated thanks to the tremendous knowledge of the volunteers who guided us through the various rooms. What a fascinating history and a real joy to see so many treasured artefacts.

The afternoon flew by. It's certainly an interesting place to go to for an afternoon out. The hall is open until September. There are a few surprises so do go and indulge yourself.

When the rain did arrive we retired to the studio and dining room and had the opportunity to continue until we battled through the torrential rain on the way home.

06/07/2019  Bill Gribble Workshop

What a brilliant day!

Bill was a truly wonderful tutor, putting us all at ease with his life in art anecdotes.

He was thoroughly prepared, clear and very professional.

The format of the day was well thought out and provided us with plenty of time to experiment with new ideas, paints and techniques, without huge chunks of information overload.

He was considerate, encouraging and appreciative, providing friendly advice and sharing some excellent tips, (who knew a large rubber band could be so useful).

Time flew by ... a sure sign we were all engrossed, and all too soon it was the end of the day.

There's definitely going to be a shortage of Water Based Oil Paints locally, as there are now several new converts.

Sketching at Nantclwyd Y Dre

The rain held off, which for this June was an unexpected bonus.

The gardens were beautiful, with the rose arch in full bloom.

We really enjoyed our time sketching and painting.

Here are a few photos from the day.

02/05/2019    Liz Bolloten Demo

Liz was an excellent tutor, inspiring those who attended her demonstration of watercolour painting today.

We met at Rhewl Pavilion, watched her perform her magic on paper before having a short practice with some of her tips.

I was so absorbed that I forgot to take photos, however, luckily James did.

16/05/2019  Sketching at The Lawnt

We had a fantastic day sketching at this stunning location.

The heady scent of jasmine filled the air in the conservatory, where we were warmly welcomed by our host and the refreshments were greatly appreciated.

The weather was warm, the sun shone and the gardens were a riot of colour.

Wild flowers blossomed in the meadow and along the banks of the stream.

Bird song accompanied the sound of the water as it gently tumbled down rocks and flowed under the old arched bridge.

Exploring the grounds, we each found or own sources of inspiration.

There was so much to see, so many scenes to capture and so much to delight our senses.

All that's left to say is a massive Thank You to our hosts - we will be back.

25/04/2019    James Eccleston Portrait Demo

During Thursday afternoon's meeting we looked at one of the ways to construct a "standard" head and how it relates to a skull. This can then be used as a mental template to compare with the subject.
A selection of black and white photographs were available to draw from.
Further portrait sessions will occur!
