Helenya Apostolou - Artist Statement

I am a multidisciplinary artist based in North Wales, UK, making bold and colourful screen-prints, paintings and digital designs; all centred around bridging the gap between movement and stillness.

I graduated from The University of Leeds in 2021, with a First Class BA in Fine Art, and I continue to create work exploring the use of colour in manufacturing movement.

I use the ‘Samoiloff Effect’  to turn layered illustrations into short and repetitive stop-motion animated cycles, so that when exposed to red, green and blue LED lighting, my work moves and changes. I use the sense of movement to highlight motion I witness in nature and as a form of storytelling, allowing meanings to unfurl and fade in and out of clarity as my paintings and prints change.'

I studied abroad for a year in Marseille, at Ecole Superieure D’Art et De Design Marseille Mediterranee, from 2019 to 2020. Here, I was part of her first international group exhibition ‘Too Much, Un Peu’.

During the lockdown of 2020, I held my first solo show, ‘Colour: Filtered Reality’ as a socially distanced event.

Since then, I have been part of four other group exhibitions, most notably: ‘Fickle Spaces’ at the School of Fine Art History of Art and Cultural Studies, Leeds, in 2021, and ‘Queer Leeds’, at The Tetley, Leeds, in 2022.
