"Colour and Space" - Workshop with Sonia Hawes

The day will include working with a limited colour palette and mixing unusual and harmonious colours.

How do sizes, shapes and colours affect the result

Thinking about colour, harmony, contrast and space, for example does introducing a contrasting colour enliven your piece of work or do you prefer the gentleness of harmony?

Materials List -

Bold are what you will need, the rest will be useful if you have them but don't buy if you don't.

Sketch book for working out ideas and old sketchbooks with some of your drawings in may be useful.

Some sheets of fairly heavy watercolour paper (gessoed) or acrylic boards or wooden boards (whatever you have) if you have them. It would be good to have a range of sizes. Piece of card, thick paper, cereal boxes gessoed are also fine. We will be working on several pieces.

Masking tape (low tack)

Glue stick

Papers for collage, either torn from magazines, wrapping paper, tissue, old paintings on paper which you are prepared to tear up if you have any etc we will be painting our own papers too.

Acrylic paint - black, white, a blue (any), a yellow(any) a red (any) we will be using these 5 for limited palette abstracts and colour mixing work.

Something to mix paint on. You can bring other colours you happen to have as you may want to change one of your colours.

Bring a selection of acrylic brushes and a water pot.

Any mark making tools you like using e.g. bamboo pen, stick, bubble wrap, cling film, fork, comb, credit card, knife. I will bring some.

If you have oil pastels, acrylic pens, pencils, acrylic inks, sharpies etc and have room to bring them do put them in but don't worry if you haven't, I will bring some.
